Beginner's Guide to NFTs: What Are Non-Fungible Tokens?

Before NFTs, it was extremely hard to verify the authenticity of digital media, as anyone would be able to copy and paste the file. •MetaMask is an Ethereum wallet available via chrome extension and mobile app. For maximum security, link your MetaMask to a Ledger hardware wallet to mitigate the risk of hacks.

Simply put, minting an NFT means you are turning a digital file into a digital asset or crypto collectible on the blockchain. When your unique token is published on the blockchain, you'll be able to sell it. You'll need to pay a small amount of cryptocurrency to mint an NFT. The content creator's public key serves as a certificate of authenticity for that particular digital artefact. The creators public key is essentially a permanent part of the token's history.

The future of NFTs lies in business applications -- as the true power of NFTs is providing authentication and facilitating the transfer of ownership. Thus, you can tokenize a bottle of wine, a Gucci bag, a property, or any physical or digital asset that is deemed unique. NFTs are also called non-fungible tokens, and they are blockchain-held tokens that represent a unique asset – whether physical or digital.

At a very high level, most NFTs are part of the Ethereum blockchain, though other blockchains have implemented their own version of NFTs. Ethereum is a cryptocurrency, like bitcoin or dogecoin, but its blockchain also keeps track of who’s holding and trading NFTs. There are many types of NFTs, but the most popular categories are art, music and collectibles.

But while it could be like a van Gogh, where there’s only one definitive actual version, it could also be like a trading card, where there’s 50 or hundreds of numbered copies of the same artwork. Also, some NFT marketplaces have a feature where you can make sure you get paid a percentage every time your NFT is sold or changes hands. That makes sure that if your work gets super popular and balloons in value, you’ll see some of that benefit. This kind of club isn’t really a new phenomenon — people have long built communities based on things they own, and now it’s happening with NFTs. It could be argued that one of the earliest NFT projects, CryptoPunks, got big thanks to its community.

This is an attractive feature as artists generally do not receive future proceeds after their art is first sold. From art and music to tacos and toilet paper, these digital assets are selling like 17th-century exotic Dutch tulips—some for millions of dollars. There have been cases of artists and creators having their work sold by others as an NFT without permission.

The trading volume for non-fungible tokens hit $10.67 billion in Q3 2021, an increase of 700% from the previous quarter. You can send someone one Bitcoin and they can send one back, and you still have one Bitcoin. (Of course, the value of Bitcoin might change during the time of exchange.) You can also send or receive smaller amounts of one Bitcoin, measured in satoshis , since fungible tokens are divisible.

For example, an NFT for a wine bottle will make it easier for different actors in a supply chain to interact with it and help track its provenance, production, and sale through the entire process. Consulting firm Ernst & Young has already developed such a solution for one of its clients. Rug pulls have become an increasingly common hazard when buying NFTs, with the proceeds of some rug pulls being valued at hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars.

Cryptocurrencies are “fungible”; they can be traded or exchanged for one another. So, with all the fuss made over NFTs, is it accurate to say that they’re now mainstream? This article makes a strong case for believing that NFTs are now baked into the public consciousness. It doesn’t hurt that a number of high-profile celebrities have ventured into NFT waters.

Essentially, NFTs can represent any form of digital file, whether that's a jpeg of a piece of art, a video, or even real estate. Turning these files into 'tokens' and securing them on a blockchain make buying, selling and trading these files efficient and reduce fraud. Several NFT exchanges were labeled as virtual asset service providers that may be subject to Financial Crimes Enforcement Network regulations. In March 2022, two people were charged for the execution of a $1,000,000 NFT scheme through wire fraud.
